Acute ankle sprains

Abstract
Ankle sprain is the most common musculoskeletal injury, and nearly half are occurring during athletic activity. Up to 40% of patients with ankle sprains may suffer from long-term residual discomfort such as pain and instability. This finding underscores the importance of receiving proper treatment and implementing effective strategies for prevention. The clinical diagnosis of co-morbid lesions of ankle sprains should not be missed; an accurate and comprehensive understanding of the patients¡¯ condition is essential to establish a detailed, appropriate treatment plan. Early treatment of acute ankle injuries should focus on controlling pain and swelling for which PRICE (protection, rest, ice, compression, and elevation) is an effective protocol. It has been shown that expedited rehabilitation accelerates healing and reduces pain more effectively than prolonged immobilization. And evidence does not clearly support an immediate surgical repair of acute ankle sprains. Surgical treatment should be considered for patients with chronic ankle instability or for those who are non-responsive to rehabilitation. The application of ankle braces and other external ankle supports, ankle taping, early functional training can protect against recurrent ankle injuries. Adequate prophylactic treatment for acute ankle sprains can prevent the condition from becoming chronic ankle instability.
